The Easter candle: meaning and origin

The Easter candle (Cereus paschalis) is a particularly large candle, traditionally made of pure beeswax. In the liturgy of the Western churches, it is consecrated and lit at the Easter fire at the beginning of the Easter Vigil. It symbolically represents the risen Christ and, as the "light of the world," brings hope back into the darkness. At Best Bougie, we reinterpret this classic with the highest quality standards.

Alpha, Omega and Cross: The symbols on the Easter candle

Every traditional Easter candle bears profound symbols: a cross, the current year, and the Greek letters Alpha and Omega. Alpha is the first, Omega the last letter of the Greek alphabet. Together, they represent Jesus Christ as the beginning and the end of everything. This design is often complemented by depictions of lambs, which are considered a symbol of peace.

Of hares and lambs: The world of Easter symbols

Easter is rich in symbolism. Besides the central Easter candle, eggs, lambs, and rabbits are among the most recognizable symbols of the festival. During the Easter Vigil itself, light, water, and the solemn "Alleluia" also play a crucial role. These symbols underscore the message of new life, fertility, and the joy of light's victory over darkness.

When does the Easter candle burn? Traditions regarding burning time

The Easter candle is traditionally lit for the first time during the Easter Vigil. Throughout the Easter season until Pentecost Sunday, it burns visibly near the altar at every liturgical celebration. After this period, it is often placed at the baptismal font. It is lit whenever the theme of resurrection and new life is present, such as at baptisms or funerals.

What happens to the old Easter candle?

Since an Easter candle is a blessed object, it should not simply be thrown away at the end of its life. Traditionally, old Easter candles are either reverently burned or buried in consecrated ground. Each year, a new candle is blessed to symbolize the eternal presence of Christ and the new beginning. Respectful handling of the material is especially important to us at Best Bougie.

History of Easter eggs: From blood red to multicolored

The tradition of dyeing eggs has historical roots. In the past, eggs were dyed red to commemorate the shed blood of Jesus and his sacrificial death. The color also helped to reliably distinguish boiled eggs from raw ones. Over the centuries, this evolved into the colorful custom we know today as a symbol of joy and spring.

Light in the window: A tradition of hospitality

Placing candles in the window has a long history. In Irish tradition, a burning candle at Christmas signaled to priests that they were welcome in the house. At Best Bougie, we see the candle in the window as a timeless symbol of warmth, friendliness, and an open home – perfect for spreading light and joy at Easter as well.
